Although the Spanish club finished 5th in La Liga, FC Valencia surprised the whole of Europe by reaching the Champions League final! A final they lost on penalties (1-1, 4-5) against Bayern Munich.
The final between Valencia and Bayern Munich ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time. Gaizka Mendieta scored for Valencia from the penalty spot in the first half, but Bayern Munich equalized through a late goal from Stefan Effenberg. The match went to a penalty shootout, where Bayern Munich emerged victorious, winning 5-4 on penalties.
Mendieta, Kily Gonzalez, Pablo Aimar, Ayala, Canizares, Angloma and John Carew were among the heroes of this European epic, having eliminated Arsenal and Leeds.
